Integrating PayPal

Overview

For many customers, PayPal is the most convenient payment method – in Kyvento you connect your PayPal business account directly and offer PayPal alongside credit card and SEPA.

Connecting PayPal

Open "Settings" → "Payments" → the "PayPal" tab and enter the credentials of your PayPal REST app (from the PayPal developer dashboard):

  • Client ID and Client Secret
  • Webhook ID – recommended: without it, payments still work, but feedback such as chargebacks or externally triggered refunds won't reach Kyvento.
  • Mode – "Sandbox" for safe testing without real payments, "Live mode" for production.

Store the displayed webhook URL in the PayPal dashboard as a webhook endpoint. With "Test connection" you verify the credentials before you save.

Enabling PayPal

After saving, activate the "PayPal" payment method in the "General" tab – your customers then see the PayPal button in the hosted checkout and the customer portal. PayPal runs independently of the card provider: you can combine it with Stripe or Unzer.

Customers can add PayPal themselves

Your customers can also add or switch to PayPal later in the customer portal — without any action on your side. They are redirected to PayPal once, confirm the approval for recurring payments there, and the method is ready for the next subscription invoice. You can see the stored method in the customer record afterwards; which method counts as the default is decided by the customer in the portal.

This is the most convenient way out of a failed payment: instead of exchanging emails, send the customer the portal link, let them switch the payment method themselves, and the next collection goes through.

Good to know

  • For recurring subscription payments, the customer authorizes PayPal once in the checkout – subsequent charges run automatically.
  • Start with sandbox mode and a test order before you go live.
  • Refunds from within Kyvento (for example during a cancellation with "Refund via payment provider") run directly through the PayPal connection.

Next steps

  • Add card payments – see "Accepting credit card payments"
  • Keep payment issues under control – see "Failed payments: smart retry"
